Football History at Grove Wood, 10th March 2017

Friday 10th March saw a historic day in Grove Wood’s footballing history as the Year 5/6 team went on to represent Southend United in the regional finals of the EFL Kids Cup 2017.

It was an early morning start for the boys as they boarded the minibus at 6.30am. The team were both excited and nervous as they made a slow start losing the first matches against an impressive Oxford United and Northampton side. The boys’ spirit rallied as they showed a vast improvement in the remaining matches winning against Bristol City and Peterborough. The team finished fifth overall on the day which was a magnificent achievement. Well done to all involved!

Date: Thursday 1st October

Girls involved: Brooke Scott-Douglas, Jessyka Tillbrook, Anastasia Campbell, Olivia Harris, Naomi Sheffield, Zoe Rodriguez, Ruby Redde, Lola Rogers, Amelia Bradford, Keira Taylor, Hope Repeti, Caitlyn Clulow and Megan Elmes.

The Girls football season started with a convincing 5-0 victory over Thundersley. Grove Wood started the game brilliantly with Naomi Sheffield having two chances, which didn't quite hit the target. Half way through the first half Grove Wood stepped up a gear and this showed with Keira Burns and Olivia Harris breaking through on goal, the ball fell to Keira and she smashed it into the back of the net, 1-0 Grove Wood.  A few minutes later it was 2-0 with the opposite of the first goal taking place, the two girls again broke free and Keira gave the ball to Olivia who scored confidently. Just before half time Naomi broke free from the defenders and sent a brilliant shot past the keeper to make it 3-0.

After half time the girls had their minds set on one thing only, more goals! Thundersley managed to get hold of the game for a few moments but they were stopped by the brilliant defending of Jessica Tillbrook and Anastasia Campbell. The game was put to bed a few minutes before time with two quick goals from Naomi and Olivia, which made it 5-0. Well done to all the girls that took part in the game. It was great effort from the whole team and a well-deserved win.

Grove Wood vs Edward Francis (Year 3 and 4 League)

Another impressive performance by our year 3 and 4 football team today led us to a 4-1 victory over local rivals, Edward Francis. It proved to be a tight encounter in the first half with drive and determination from both teams. The breakthrough came late in the first half as Lester Ward latched onto a loose ball to convert comfortably. In the second half Grove Wood showed their dominance in this match with goals from Olivia Harris and Ben Ward. The children must be commended for their positive passing play. So great to see for all involved! Keep it up… Mr Seaman

Edward Francis vs Grove Wood (Essex Cup)

After a tight battle in the borough tournament, where Grove Wood were crowned local area champions we fought hard to earn a tough draw against a strong Edward Francis team. This draw proved crucial in our victory, so we know we were in for a challenge in this Essex Cup match. The team started the match with positive play, but with no clear cut opportunities. Edward Francis took the lead in the first half. Grove Wood fought back with strength and commitment with a great goal from Leo Wood. Unfortunately, after a string of outstanding saves from ‘stand in’ goalkeeper, Harrison Mead, Edward Francis took the lead with a well worked second goal. 2-1 to Edward Francis was the final score. A special mention must go to Harrison for his performance and Ben Fautley for working hard to make a positive impact in the match. Well done Grove… Mr Seaman

Year 5/6 football vs Edward Francis

On Thursday 4th February, Grove Wood’s Year 5/6 boys’ football team played against Edward Francis. It was a very interesting match with lots of attempts at goal shots by both teams.

In the 1st half, Jack, Will, Ben, Leo, Rowan and Harri-son were playing for Grove. Rowan made a great strike at the goal but Edward Francis made a good save.
Edward Francis then hit the crossbar with an excel-lent strike but Jack swooped in with an even better save. At half time, the score was 0-0.

At the start of the 2nd half, Grove Wood made a few changes and brought on Isaac Jolley, Isaac Acquah and Ryan Hoskins. It was a lively second half with both sides attacking and defending well. Isaac A, un-luckily, missed the goal. It went just over the top and then 9 minutes before the end of the match, number 4 scored for Edward Francis. It was a close match; ex-citing to watch. Unluckily for Grove, the final score was 1-0 to Edward Francis.
Leo Wood said, “It was an ex-tremely close match. I thought Grove played very well but their number 4 played brilliantly and scored a screamer.”

Year 3/4 football vs Rayleigh Primary

Thursday 25th February

Venue: Grove Wood Primary School

On Thursday 25th February, a depleted year 3 and 4 football team arrived to attempt to keep their winning run going. With the fantastic skills of the unavailable goalkeeper, turns were taken by both Ben and Jake to keep the Rayleigh strikers at bay. The match was closely fought up until half time with both sides have few chances and having some fantastic build up play. The Grove Wood team were playing some attractive football but couldn’t beat the talented Rayleigh goalkeeper who kept out every attempt and incoming cross.

The second half continued in the same way as the first with few chance being created and both keepers keeping what was created quiet. That was until a free-kick was given away on the edge of the Grove Wood box and up stepped the Rayleigh captain who calmly curled the ball into the top corner to the dismay of the Grove Wood team, supporters and manager. The Grove Wood pushed on and created more chances, however, the impressive Rayleigh keeper kept the score to nil. Grove Wood were awarded a penalty which the goalkeeper incredibly saved. Grove pushed for an equaliser but were caught short at the back and Rayleigh added a second goal.

The players played incredibly well and the scoreline didn’t reflect the performance or the amount of chances that Grove had.

Children involved: Ben Hoskins, Olivia Harris, Jake Ashworth, Ronnie Reeves, Frankie Scott Douglas, George Heathcoate, Ellis Tutt and Liam Davey.

Our girls played with confidence, calmness and they showed an incredible team spirit supporting each other. They were a credit to Grove and both teams had total respect for each other.  Naomi Sheffield and Olivia Harris scored incredible goals and Lola Rogers made quick decisions to make some decisive saves.  The final score was 9-0 to Grove.

Mr Banks wanted to congratulate the girls for not losing a single game all season and coming away with the league trophy. Well done girls.

Grovewood Boys 8 vs 1 Glebe.
Another fine performance to end the season with a mixed team of year 5 and 6 boys, we took a little bit of time to grow into the game but once we opened our account, the boys never looked back.
Goals came from Ryan H, Zak S, Isaac A, Ollie R, and a Hat trick from Luke B. It is good to see the boys maintain shape and show unselfish play in front of goal even when the game was comfortably won. We now head to Roots Hall next week for The Community Cup competition.
Mr Sangwin

Grove Wood Boys Tournament

Our team should be very proud of their efforts at Roots Hall stadium in the Schools Community Cup recently. We ended 3rd in our group of 6 teams but missed out on qualification to the semi finals. The boys played some excellent football and it was nice to hear some of Southend United’s staff comment on the high standard of football Grove Wood were playing. In the end, a couple of goals against the run of play cost us the chance to progress, but the boys had a thoroughly good time and Mr Banks and Mr Sangwin can now also say they have scored at Roots Hall, so a good day all round.

Squad from Jack B, Leo W, Rowan S, Ollie R, Ryan H, Harrison M, Isaac A and Luke B.
